Running P Ropes Proper Rope Care

How to Get the Most From Your Rope

At Running P Ropes we know that proper rope care can mean the difference in getting just five steers out of your rope or getting fifty-five steers out of it. Once you find the perfect lariat with that great feel to it, you want it to last as long as possible. This is why we have developed the following rope care tips.

The New Rope Breaking-in Process

When you get your new Running P rope, it is important that you get a feel for it. Swing it around a few times. If you are a beginner, try stretching your new rope on a fence post or some other stationary object. This will give you an idea of how your new rope feels and performs.

Next, you need to gently stretch the rope. This can be done by looping the rope around a solid post and pulling with an even pressure by using your horse or your body weight. Be careful not to stretch it too fast or too much because this can cause the rope to break down, and it will lose its body.

Running Steers

Once you have stretched your new rope, it’s time to put it to work. Start by running about five steers with it. After each run, you want to coil the rope up properly. Make sure you straighten out the eye or honda each time. When you are finished running the steers, coil up your rope and secure it with a few ties. Then place the rope in your rope bag and leave it there overnight. This will help the rope maintain its body and consistent feel.

If you are at a roping, and you only have new lariats to work with, you should switch out the ropes after every three to five steers. This is important because it keeps you from putting too much pressure on a single rope all at once. Too much pressure, too fast, will cause the lariat to lose its body. Once a rope loses its body, it will be useless to you. Always remember to coil your rope properly and store it in your rope bag between runs.

Storing Your Running P Rope

If you want your ropes to last, proper storage is important. You want to make sure your ropes are protected from moisture and extreme temperature changes. A great place to store your ropes would be inside the house where the temperature is usually consistent.

When you follow these proper rope care tips, your Running P Ropes will last you a very long time.
